FAQs

Let Miller Bartz Septic Answer Your Septic Tank Questions

  • How Often Should I Pump My Septic Tank?

It depends on the size of your tank, but we generally recommend your septic tank be pumped every three years. After your first pump, we can tell you when it should be pumped again.

  • I've Heard Some People Say They Never Have to Have Their Tank Pumped. Is That True?

False. Septic tanks need to be emptied regularly to prevent the solids from leaching into the runs of your drain field and plugging it. Once solids reach your drain field, they harden like cement, preventing your tank liquids from being absorbed. The only solution is to replace the drain field, which can be very expensive.

  • How Many Lids Are on My Septic Tank?

If your tank was installed before 1978, it probably only has one lid. Tanks installed after that date have two lids.

  • If My Septic Tank Has More Than One Lid, Do I Need to Pump Both Compartments?

Yes. We recommend both sides be pumped at the same time as solids from one side can get into the other. Don't run the risk of solids getting into your drain field. Pumping both sides at the same time is also cheaper than calling us back for another pump.

  • Are ‘Flushable' Wipes and Feminine Hygiene Products Okay to Flush Down the Toilet?

Absolutely not. These products take up space in your tank and do not break down. Over time this could cause your system to plug, costing you more money to handle the disposal of these products.

  • Do I Have to Have My Septic Tank Pumped When I Sell My House?

Yes. Every house sold must have a well and septic inspection done by a licensed inspector. The septic tank also must be pumped unless it has been pumped in the previous three years, and you have a ‘Septic Tank Maintenance Report' to prove it. The inspector, realtor, or homeowner will call us to schedule the pump. When we pump the tank, we will provide the inspector, realtor, or homeowner a ‘Septic Tank Maintenance Report' after we receive payment for the service.

  • Is There an Additive I Can Put into My Septic Tank to Break Down the Solids?

No. The natural bacteria in the tank should be enough to break down the solids. If you use bleach or antibacterial soap on a regular basis, you can flush a packet of Baker's Yeast down the toilet once a month to keep the bacteria working.
